Cricket- National Over 50s Championship

Gloucestershire v Cornwall

At Dumbleton on Wednesday, won by Gloucestershire by five runs.

After the first three matches were postponed Cornwall made the long journey to Dumbleton in Gloucestershire to begin this years over 50s County Championship. Cornwall won the toss and asked Gloucestershire to bat first. Some excellent bowling by Roy Strout, Roy Williams and Les Driver, making his first appearance for the over 50s restricted Gloucestershire to 187 for 9, an attainable total.

Although the top five Cornish batsmen all scored runs, the Gloucestershire opening bowlers were very difficult to score from especially D Gorrick, from his opening seven overs only one run was scored.

After 30 overs Cornwall lost their second wicket but the total was then only 84 another 104 runs were needed in 15 overs. In trying to keep up with the run rate wickets were being lost, and at 158 for 9 it looked all over. Charlie Noy and Roy Strout made a stand of 24 and in trying to go for one last six to win the game Strout was caught with one ball remaining. A disappointing start to the season, but hopefully lessons have been learned.
