Callington v Trevone

Callington lifted the Clive Rosevear-sponsored Hawkey Cup for the first time since 1992 with a convincing win over brave Trevone from North Cornwall.

Not that their performance looked too convincing off nine overs of Callington's innings as the County One side were reduced to 43-4, and they really were on the ropes. Dave Dunnett, the ex-Boconnoc pace man, castled Andy Snowdon with the second ball of the game, and Sid Morris claimed the important wickets of Sylvester and Hocking. However, the middle order did their job and Rob Legg, Lee Pascoe and Peter Tancock managed to build up a respectable total with scores of 22, 24 not out and 18 respectively, in front of a large crowd at Wheal Eliza. Bob Dickinson was the pick of the Trevone bowlers with three for 18.

Trevone were under pressure from the start of their reply, and they lost wickets with regularity against some sharp Callington fielding and aggressive bowling from Brenton and Sylvester. Kevin Gill made 14 and Dinky Hawke a dozen, but at the half-way stage, they were struggling on 32 for three, with the target of 125 to win a long way off. After that the game belonged to Mark Pluckrose who savaged the lower order with his slow-medium seamers. Assisted by some excellent wicket keeping from Nick White, Pluckrose claimed five for 17 to earn himself the Man of the Match award at the end of the game. Trevone were eventually dismissed for a total of 84 after a last wicket stand of 20 between Rob Taylor and Sid Morris. Callington now go on to face the winner of the West's Vinter Cup at Truro on Wednesday July 28th.
