Cricket- County Division Three (East)
Wadebridge v Callington
Another glorious day for cricket saw a large crowd who were obviously expectant of a hatful or runs. Instead of that, they got a low-scoring game that was as exciting as any game seen at Wadebridge this season.
Upon winning the toss, Callington elected to bat and soon found the wicket was not as easy-going as it looked. Against some lively bowling by Simon Parkyn and Henry De Villiers, Callington were always on the back foot. Wickets tumbled, and after 24 overs they had scored just 66 runs for a loss of three. Despite a brave knock by Trevor Collins (24), it was Vic Voyzey with a defiant 40 that helped Callington set a target to bowl at. Steve Blatchford chipped in with 14 to see Callington finish on a score of 130.
Wadebridge's reply started disastrously, as Jon Nicholls and Mark James ripped out Wadebridge's top order. In 14 tight overs, they had reduced them to 21-5, with Nicholls in particular being more than a little miserly about giving runs away. The game started to appear to be in the bag for Callington, but the pairing of Tom Gurney and captain Neil Richards had other ideas.
Biding their time, they added 41 runs before James Shorten bowled Richards. Gurney then found a new ally in David Hamilton and at 96-6, the game began to swing towards Wadebridge. Ian Birch then removed Gurney and when James bowled Hamilton, it was 112-9, with three overs left. Parkyn then took it upon himself to win the game and a huge six saw them needing just seven to win. However, upon trying to repeat the shot, he was well caught by Voyzey, meaning Callington had won yet another nail-biting game.
