St Austell v Callington
In one of the most pulsating games seen at Wheal Jane in many years Callington beat St Austell by one run with one ball remaining.
Winning the toss and electing to bat on a hard fast wicket Andrew Shorten and Trevor Collins added 40 before Shorten fell for 28. The King soon followed assigned to tea money collecting again and when Collins went for 45 St Austell and Callington struggling on 136-4 after 36 overs.
Vic Voyzey and skipper Gareth Evely then set about the St Austell attack. Voyzey was first to go for a brisk 30 and when Evely was joined by Ian Hunn he hammered the ball to all areas of the ground and was finally bowled for a magnificent 51 in 40 balls. Callington finally finished on 211-6 which to all in the ground seem 20 runs to short.
St Austell's reply saw Mark James break the opening stand in his second over but experienced campaignes Ian Collings and Steve Jarman set about re-building the innings. They added 57, mostly from the end James was not bowling, before Collings fell for 26.
With Jarman and skipper Simon Rattenbury looking in control, skipper Evely turned to Hunn for an insprirational spell. And what a spell he got. Hunn took three wickets including Jarman for 50 and at 122-6 Callington were on top. Alan Lund and Steve Bone had other ideas.
They added 61 in eight overs and needing just 27 off 8 overs the game looked lost for Callington. Not to be Hunn then removed Lund and when Bone was run out it left St. Austell on 200-9 with 3 overs remaining. Frank Wilder and Ian Trembeth scored 10 runs and with two balls left and two runs needed for a win Hunn had Wilder caught by Voyzey and Callington had won a magnificent cricket match. Hunn finished with a match winning 6-47 was Callington's pick of the bowlers.
