Menheniot v Werrington

Menheniot entertained Werrington on Saturday, on one of those days that was overcast and humid when time seems to stand still.

Indeed, with recent rain having left the wicket slow and lifeless, the home side batting first, found it difficult to get any life into their innings at all. It was one of those days when batsmen came and went without anybody looking as if they were going to play a commanding innings. John Carpenter tried to do just that, but when he was out for 17 in the 24th over, Menheniot had limped along to 56-5.

Things got a little better in the second half of the allotted overs as the visitors bowling attack continued to tie the home batting down and really it was only Melvin Rigler with a beilligerernt 27 whilst batting with a pulled muscle that enabled Menheniot to reach three figures in posting a final total of 125-9. Credit must go to Werrington's bowlers who gave nothing away with Smeeth and Allan in particular being very hard to score runs off.

Werrington in reply crawled along at the same sort of snail's pace that Menheniot had managed and indeed at the half-way stage had scored about the same amount of runs as the home side had gained. The difference was that they had only lost one wicket to Menheniot's five and that they knew exactly what they had to. Jeremy Randle was unlucky not to record more than the one wicket that he did, but it has to be said that Werrington in the shape of Andy Smeeth were always in control and reached their target in the 41st over for the loss of three wickets. Smeeth can look back on a fine match, scoring 57 not out after taking two wickets in the Menheniot innings.
