Cricket- County Division Three (East)
Callington v Wadebridge
Callington's promotion hopes took a severe knock on Sunday when an inept batting display saw them slump to 69-run defeat against Wadebridge. Upon winning the toss, Wadebridge elected to bat and lost a wicket in the first over. Ian Botha and Rob Harrison then set about the attack, and after 10 overs the score stood at 50-1, suggesting that a high score could be on the cards.
Gareth Evely and Jon Nicholls slowed the rate down and Wadebridge were limited to 88-1 at the half-way stage. After reaching his half-century, a Harrison shot was well held by Evely and when Botha fell to Simon Harris, the large total began to fade away. Despite good knocks by Stuart Parkyn and David Hamilton, Farris and Mark James wiped out the tail and Wadebridge finished on 157.
Callington's reply started disastrously and then proceeded to get worse. Against the bowling of Richard Centini and Hank de Villiers, they collapsed to 47-6, and any visions of victory faded. Skipper Evely, aided by Farris, then added an air of respectability.
In a fine innings of 36, he pulled most balls to the boundary and after smashing a six straight over everyone's heads, he was out to Matthew Liddicoat, again attempting a pull. The tail didn't wag and Callington were all out for a paltry 88. For Wadebridge, Centini, de Villiers and Liddicoat all took three wickets and they took home 18 valuable points.
