Cricket County Division Three East - Callington v Menheniot

Callington opened their account for the new century with a win over one of the pre-season favourites for the title.

On winning the toss, Menheniot skipper Hugh Rogers had no hesitation in asking his old club to bat. He was rewarded in the first over when Shaun Taylor bowled Trevor Collins. Andrew Shorten and Tony Farrant, in his comeback game after taking a year out to cook burgers!, slowly pulled Callington back into the game. On a slow wicket, which was not surprising after the recent rain, they took the score to 36 before Shorten was caught and bowled by Phil Adsett.

Rogers and Adsett then tore into the Callington batting and after 34 overs had reduced them to 78-8. Standing alone in this debacle was Farrant and when Jon Nicholls joined him at the crease Callington at last took the game to Menheniot. Farrant deservedly reached his 50 and when he was out for 58 Callington were on 114 and finally reached 121. For Menheniot, Rogers and Adsett took 4-21 and 3-38 respectively.

Menheniot's reply was a little better than Callington's. Although the wicket was still slow, Adsett and John Carpenter added 16 before Carpenter fell to Mark James. Adsett followed soon after for 18 but captain Rogers and Dan Herbert took the score to 65 when Herbert fell to Ian Hunn. Hunn then bowled dangerman Rogers for 32 and Callington were back in the game. Despite a hard-hitting 12 from Nick Carpenter, Menheniot's tail did not wag and had no answer to James' pace. The final five wickets fell for just three runs to ensure Callington a winning Millennium start and James' ended with an impressive 6-20.
