Cricket- County Division Three (East)

Callington v Menheniot

For the first time this season, the weather was hot and sunny and, much to the delight of his team, stand-in skipper Steve Blatchford won the toss and elected to bat.

With a long, hot afternoon in the field to look forward to, Menheniot soon struck when Ian Goldsmith had Andrew Shorten caught off the fourth ball of the innings. When the same bowler removed Peter Tancock for 11, Callington teetered on 18-2 and the sun-bathing players on the boundary were beginning to wonder if they'd need to pad up. This was not the case as Trevor Collins and 15 year-old wonderkid Dominic Farris took the attack to Menheniot and forged an unbroken stand of 229.

Despite using five bowlers including useful spells by 14 year and 15 year-olds Alan Tunnadine and Stuart Taylor, Farris and Collins dominated the day. Collins was the first to reach 100 which included 15 fours but the biggest cheer of the day was when Farris reached his 100 which included nine fours. For their part, Menheniot never dropped their heads and Callington finished on 247-2 which is their highest total so far this season.

Menheniot's reply started disastrously for them when Mark James rippled out the top three batsmen for only 17 on the board. John Carpenter and Ian Goldsmith added 71 before Goldsmith fell for 39 and in his first game of the season Phil Goldsmith hit a quick 17 before falling to Ian Hunn. Carpenter then found the perfect ally in young Taylor. Carpenter, with his guild and Taylor with raw power took the game to Callington and suddenly the big target looked reachable. James then came back into the attack and removed Carpenter for a valuable 55. Taylor then unleashed himself on the bowling but he ran out of partners as Callington finally won by 38 runs. Taylor was left not out on 62 and James was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 6-41. So Callington amassed another 20 points but this was definitely a day when cricket and the spirit of the game were the winners.
