Cricket- County Division One
St Just v Callington
Batting first at St Just, Callington were reduced to 23 for three after 11 overs, partly thanks to the accurate pace attack of Joe Badcock and Graham Trenwith. Andy Hocking and Jamie Hatch restored some pride, despite the former taking a nasty blow to the head for one of Badcock's risers.
However, you don't police Union St without being able to withstand a knock or two, and Hocking carried on to score 28 before being caught behind off Naseer Ahmed.
Hatch looked confident before missing one from Mike Roberts for a good effort of 41 and Pascoe and Brenton both reached double figures. At the end White and James Shorten added 32 for the ninth wicket to set a target of 148 to win. Badcock, Trenwith and Ahmed shared six of the wickets to fall.
Openers Gary Thomas and Ahmed looked assured as they found the buffet to their liking. However, they did not have it all their own way, as both were dropped off the forlorn Pluckrose. After these let-offs, batsmen of their class usually go on to big scores, and County Captain Thomas must have kicked himself to holding out to Snowdon at deep extras cover with only 10 more needed. He had scored 65, and Ahmed saw them home with an unbeaten 65 to secure the points. James Shorten was Callington's only wicket taker, but St Just is a long way to go for three points.
