Cricket- County Division One
Helston v Callington
At Helston on Saturday, won by Helston by six wickets.
Callington's plight deepened at Beacon Park on Saturday, although Jamie Hotel won his first toss of the season and elected to bat. However, the suicide button proved too inviting and Andrew Snowdon and the welcomed-back Colin Kitt could not resist pressing it as they were both run out with only themselves to blame.
John Sylvester was looking good before he floated one up to mid-off and Greg Floyd accepted the chance. Andy Hocking played carefully, facing 81 balls for this 22 and Hotel tried to stay with him, but after they were out only Lee Pascoe showed any resistance with 20.
Tim Biston bowled his 16 overs of seam up, taking three for 34 and arguably the best of overseas professionals in county one. Nahees Akhtar bowled another impressive 16 overs of medium/fast bowling, taking three for 25, as Callington's effort petered out to 110. This gave the bowlers nothing to bowl at, although Snowdon raced in with 10 lively overs to his one for 22. Simon Wherry set the home ship on course with 31, assisted by Duncan Ayrel who made 30. Akhtar remained unbeaten on 26, and Helson coasted home in the 35th over.
The only really good thing to come Callington's way was the debut performance of James Shorten. Bowling against the hugely experienced Akhtar and Ayres, he could be proud of his two for 19 off seven overs taking the wickets of Ayres, caught behind by Nick White, and Floyd with the assistance of a great catch by Kitt.
