Falmouth v Callington

A glorious day greeted Callington at Trescobeas, but the holidaying Jamie Hatch lost an important toss, and the visitors faced a hot afternoon in the field.

Falmouth started steadily with 42 before Larry Martin was caught behind off Brenton. Keith Meener had one of his few failures against Callington, but then opener Steve 'Digger' Williams and Sean Turner added a score of 73 before Turner was out one ball after reaching his 50. Williams, however, never looked in trouble.

After making an unbeaten 71 at Callington in May, he continued to be the thorn in their side, and this time went one better. His fine century came in 150 balls before he finally went for 104 with just three balls of the innings remaining. His innings included 11 fours and his linchpin effort lasted for 173 minutes. Falmouth just crept over the 200 threshold to set a target of 203. Andy Brenton took three for 65 and John Sylvester two for 43 off 16 overs.

Callington's reply could be fairly described as dismal, or the efforts of the first nine batsmen at least, none of merited a press mention. Suffice to say that after 27 overs, Callington were reduced to 81 for the loss of nine, and another humiliation was in progress. Once again, wily veteran and slow bowling County legend David Toseland was the main problem, and he took five for 35 off his 16 overs, supports by Dave 'Paceman' Angove with four for 35. However, with all looking lost, Nick White was joined by Mark Pluckrose and their unlikely alliance produced a fine stand of 70.

They saw off Toseland's remaining overs and then set about the spin of Dave Neville and the medium pace of Paul Goodwin. In the end, the fairy tale ended when Angove was brought back as skipper. Hooper was becoming a trifle concerned as he stood at second slip. Angove bowled Pluckrose out, but only after the Callington No. 11 had made 27, including four fours. White remained not out on a score of 41, including seven fours, to give Callington extra valuable batting points, and hopefully give the more recognised batsmen something to think about.
