Cricket- County Division One
Callington v Troon
On a hot, humid day in Callington, Jamie Hatch won what would prove to be an important toss and, not surprisingly, elected to bat.
Colin Kitt made 20 before lobbing one up to mid-on, and John Sylvester made a quick-fire contribution of 37 off just 33 balls. By this time, Troon had reverted to the all-spin attack of Ashrad Khan and Gary Spencer and the runs suddenly became hard to come by.
However, the dependable Andy Hocking was looking assured, although he watched a string of partners fall by the wayside. In the end, he hung on until the ninth wicket down before succumbing to Martin Jenkin, but only after scoring a fine 69, including nine fours and a six. Nick White fell to the last ball of the innings, stumped by his opposite number, and the Callington total was set on 180. Spencer and Jenkin shared eight of the wickets.
What happened after tea could only be described as bizarre. With Andy Brenton bowling up the hill and finding the seam and Sylvester coming down from the pavilion end. The Troon innings was more like a game of dominoes than a game of cricket. Only extras, with 14, registered double figures and the next top scorer was Trevor Angove with five.
Opener Alan Shear faced 75 balls for his three, and his was the ninth wicket to fall. The bowlers were backed up by some good work in the field, but even then two chances were put down. In the end, Troon were all out for a miserable 33, with Brenton taking five for 18 off 12 overs, and Sylvester an amazing five for eight off 11.5 overs.
