Callington got their season underway, winning at home to newly promoted St Blazey on Monday. Again Callington won the toss and invited the visitors to bat, which seemed a good decision as St Blazey were reduced to 30 for five after 18 overs. Mike Best made 28 to recover the situation a little, assisted by Smith and Nick Carter Snr., while Steve Allen scored 12 at the end.
However, 103 was a disappointing total. Godfrey Furse claimed four for 26, and Jim Shorten bowled well for this three for 28, including the vital wicket of ex-England man Neil Williams. Andrew Jones also enjoyed two stumpings.
In reply, Callington started slowly against the pace of Williams and Nick Carter Jnr., losing Snowdon, Furse and John Sylvester by the 13th over. At this stage, with the score on 31-3, the modest target seemed a long way off, but then Andy Hocking and Bill Prosser took over. The hard-hitting pair saw Callington home in the 24th over with a fine display of power batting. Hocking made 49 including two sixes and six fours and Prosser took 32 off 30 balls including three large sixes. Williams took three for 22 for St Blazey, but this was Callington's day, earning them 19 valuable points, after the disappointment of Saturday.
