Callington v Penzance
Asked to bat first by Penzance, Andrew Snowden and Jamie Hatch got the home side off to steady start, with an opening partnership of 32 before Snowden was caught by Tony Riggall for 15. Hatch was then joined by John Sylvester who was in great form.
The West Indian wasted no time in putting bat to ball and he and Hatch put on 107 for the second wicket Hatch made way for Andy Hocking after making 33. Sylvester continued to take the attack to Penzance and his century came up in just 91 balls, to send the large crowd into delirium. Sylvester carried his bat for a fine 141 n.o. which included 11 fours and five massive sixes as nearby houses came under seige. Hocking made 35 before becoming Lavender's third victim and Callington registered a large total of 252 for three. Lavender was Penzance's only wicket taker with three for 65 off 16 overs.
Tim Lord and Scott May got the reply off to a cracking start, putting on 64 in 16 overs before Pluckrose and Sylvester combined to dismiss Lord for 33. May made 28 before edging one to Nick White off Brenton, and then Taghir Mehmood hit 43 and Kevin Nankeruis threatened to spoil Callington's afternoon. However, the John Sylvester one-man show continued and he pulled off four catches in the deep to send a string of batsmen to the pavilion. Lee Pascoe took a fine catch off James Shorten to dismiss the dangerous Mehmood and Penzance struggled from then on. Shorten's left armers yielded four for 38 to take the bowling honours and Callington were left to savour their first win all season, and set them up for Saturday's long trek to St Just.
