Cricket- County Division One

Callington v Helston

The weather had the final say as Callington hosted league leaders Helston at New Road.

Batting first, Helston found runs hard to come by although Wherry and Akhtar batted soundly against accurate bowling, particularly from Sylvester. Amir Abbassi made 34 off 56 balls in the middle of the innings, but Callington managed to keep the score down assisted by four run outs and two stumpings from Nick White.

The total of 161 did not seem too daunting at tea, although the clouds looked threatening. Sylvester was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-23 from his 16 overs of medium pace.

Callington lost the returning Colin Kitt early on and Sylvester fell leg before to Tim Boston. Andrew Snowdon with 29 and Andrew Hocking (27) got the ship back on course, and then Rob Legg did well with 26 against the guile of professionals Naheem Aklhtar and Abbassi.

However with the game evenly poised and Callington needing 40 to win from the last seven overs and with three wickets in hand umpires Stevens and Rogers decided that the light was dangerous to the players and took them off as the drizzle set in. Far from the ideal ending but probably the right decision in interest of players safety.
