TWO creches under threat of closure have been given a reprieve. Around 60 concerned members of the public and representatives from the Caradon branch of the Unison union lobbied councillors to keep the creches at Lux Park Leisure Centre in Liskeard and Saltash Leisure Centre open as they went into a meeting of the full council on Tuesday. Inside councillors agreed to keep the creches open for the immediate future with a view to reviewing the situation and considering other ways of paying for the facilities. Jon Niblett, Unison's branch secretary, said: 'We are very pleased that it looks like they're going to be kept open.' Unison has claimed that five staff at the creches faced redundancy at the end of March if the creches were forced to close. Sara Lundon, Unison steward, said that the mood at the two centres was upbeat following Tuesday's decision. 'We're feeling very positive,' she said. 'The feeling at the meeting was that the majority of councillors are on our side now and they don't want to lose such a valuable service. 'Although it's going to review it's positive that the decision was not just made to close the creches and we think around 85 per cent of councillors are now on our side.' Creche users had also been writing to express their concern regarding the potential loss of the service, which they said enabled them to use facilities at the centres. Sara said that this contributed to the health of people in the area – one of Caradon District Council's top priorities. The council's Cabinet had recommended that the creches be closed as part of measures to help the authority save £685,530 in the next financial year. This figure had to be reduced to £651,030 after it was decided to give the creches a stay of execution. These savings are also based on a proposed increase in parking charges being approved after a public consultation ends on February 24 and the matter is discussed by Caradon's Community Services Panel on March 6. Council leader Hugh Francis said: 'I proposed that the creches should be closed but the people who moved that they should stay open felt that they provided a much valued service, which clearly they do.'
