The Environment Agency is calling on businesses dealing with waste tyres to make sure they are stored and disposed of responsibly and within the law.
The closure of Cornwall’s main waste tyre facility in St Erth, following a serious fire earlier this month, means that businesses previously using the site will need to use other Environment Agency permitted sites.
In doing so, businesses are being asked to make sure any new waste sites they use are authorised to accept tyres and don’t accept more tyres than they are allowed to by their Environment Agency permit.
Accepting waste tyres when not properly authorised is a criminal offence and potentially very dangerous.
The Environment Agency is sharing intelligence and information with partners, including Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and Cornwall Council.

If you are looking for somewhere to send end of life tyres, the Environment Agency has a public register where anyone can find details of legitimate sites. The register is available on www.gov.uk by searching ‘public register environmental information’.
