A couple who met when they both worked for Liskeard jewellers Ham and Huddy celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Saltash last Friday. Ken and Averil Edgeler were married at St Neot Methodist Chapel in 1957 and on Sunday they returned to the chapel for the morning service with their family. Averil was born at St Neot, one of eight children, and attended the local school. On leaving at the age of 14, she helped at home with the large family. She later worked in a local farmhouse, then moved on to become a canteen clerical assistant at the school. The headmaster who had come from Kent as an evacuee teacher later returned to Kent and Averil went to Kent as his housekeeper but, three years later, he died and she returned to Cornwall to work in Liskeard from 1948 to 1956. Since coming to Saltash, Averil has been treasurer of Saltash Town Band since 1979, and she is a member of Saltash Wesley Sisterhood, and has been both treasurer and secretary at different times. Ken was born in Plymouth, later moving to Liskeard with his family and attended Varley Lane School, leaving at 15 to be apprenticed as a clockmaker. He did his two-year National Service in the army with REME. Later, he worked at Rank Radio in the model- making shop for 27 years, being made redundant in 1981. He worked at Tamar View Nurseries for two years, then he became gardener and caretaker at Port View Surgery part-time and also worked as a porter at St Barnabas Hospital, Saltash, for 14 years, retiring in1998. He was a keen member of Saltash Allotment Association, exhibiting at the annual show for 20 years until it closed down. The couple have four children – Brian Edgeler, Trudy Grimwood, Caroline Truscott and Rob Edgeler – and five grandchildren. After attending the morning service with all of their family, children and grandchildren, who then took them out to lunch.
