Caradon council is working with a sports association to ensure the long-term future for sport.

A meeting between the district council and the Liskeard and District Sports Association (LDSA) was held this week and Caradon has said it is 'committed' to ensuring that arrangements for sporting facilities and lease arrangements are in place before One Cornwall council comes in next year.

Funding for the facilities is the main issue and the council is looking to write off existing debts that are outstanding.

It has been suggested that the figure could be more than £100,000.

Future funding may be sought directly from the individual sports clubs in the area, with the help of the town councils, and cllr John Turner is urging them to work together to find a solution.

Cllr Turner said: 'Caradon is committed to developing sports in Liskeard and the surrounding area.

'What we are trying to do is get the structure set up and I have been given a deadline of March 1.'

Steve Barrett, from the LDSA, said: 'The association needs to find new sources of funding which, in partnership with the district and town councils and local sports clubs, will secure the future of sports facilities in the area.'

Cllr Turner added: 'We need to ensure that there is investment in place and we want to make sure that the public purse is not compromised.'

Talks are set to continue with both clubs and town councils.
