SALTASH Chamber of Commerce members had expressed their concern in a letter to the Town Council about the closure of toilets in Alexandra Square, Saltash. Caradon Council had decided to close them due to the vandalism causing them to be in a bad state. The Chamber felt that a suitable alternative should be provided. Councillor Baz Gregory said that the Council was disappointed that they had to close the toilets. Last autumn, the Town Council heard that the toilets would cost in the region of £10,000 to £12,000 to bring them up to standard. They decided that they could not take them over until Caradon had brought them up to good working order. Public toilets have also been closed at St Stephens, Saltash. Councillor David Carter said the Town Council had decided not to take on the care of the toilets from Caradon Council. Councillor Peter Stephens asked if the public toilets could be opened just for the May Fair weekend, while Councillor Stephen Tait suggested that portable toilets could be used instead. Councillor Brian Carter proposed that the Town Council supports the letter from the Chamber that will be sent to Caradon about the toilet closure. This was agreed by the Council. Meanwhile, during a public question time at last Thursday's Town Council meeting, a member of the public said they were concerned about advertising boards obstructing the pavements in Fore Street, making it difficult for prams, motorised wheel chairs and blind people to get around them. Traders will be asked to be considerate as to where they place their boards so that they do not cause any difficulties.
