Saltash Town Council has given its support for plans to build a Tesco store in the Carkeel area of the town.

The council recommended the planning application for approval to Cornwall Council at the town's monthly full council meeting.

Eight councillors voted in favour of the recommendation and there were four abstentions.

Concerns were raised about the impact such a development could have on businesses in Fore Street and safe access to the store. A representative from Tesco told people at the meeting that 400 people had attended the public consultation and that 180 written responses had been received. He said access issues were still being discussed and that if the development gets the go-ahead the store will provide 135 full-time jobs.

The plans will now go before officers at Cornwall Council where a decision will be made.
