Saltash town council's policy and resources committee has agreed to a proposal of £3,000 towards events organised for this year, and next, by Saltash Festival 1999/2000.
Festival committee chairman, Sue Hooper, said various funds from other sources have been applied for, these including Leader 11.
The policy and resources committee also agreed £1,000 should be given to the Chamber of Commerce towards the cost of the town's Christmas lights, while another £1,000 was proposed towards the Celtic cross project at Carkeel for next year.
Age Concern asked for financial help towards the running of their car service which carries 30-40 passengers each week. It was agreed to seek more information.
Stephen Tait spoke of Latchbrook estate, and the possibility of a residents' association being formed there. He suggested the council might be able to help with the funding of a room for the first meeting. This was welcomed by mayor, Mona Tomaszewksa.
An idea that the council should produce a newsletter to be issued to all residents was put forward by Joyce Mepstead. While the committee thought it could be a good suggestion there were worries about expense, and distribution. Mr Tait suggested a council 'news flyer' might be the answer, and the council will investigate the possibility.
All committee decisions have to be ratified by the full council at their monthly meeting.
Committee members agreed that the council's permission should be sought for the use of the town seals on items such as stationery and souvenirs. They also received a letter from the family of the late Alf Brooking, former mayor and councillor the Saltash. They asked if a seat could be placed in the town in his memory, and this was agreed, although the exact location has not been decided.
