Council plans to

cut car journeys

A SCHEME may be introduced to cut the number of cars used for working purposes by Caradon council staff.

The council may consider, among other options, buying a pool of cars which would be ready for use by those staff and officers who wish to travel to out-of-town meetings, or site meetings. If such a project was adopted some staff may decide to travel to work on other forms of transport, while others might share pool vehicles to attend meetings.

The scheme, which could involve a draft plan being presented to councillors by late December, follows on from Caradon council employees taking part in a contest last week. This involved staff from the six Cornish district councils, the county council, and the Cornwall Healthcare Trust travelling to work in a 'green' way. Seven at Caradon, according to the council's Local Agenda 21 officer Alex Lochhead, took to the saddle and cycled.

He did say that as Caradon is in a rural area it is difficult to always rely on public transport, but added that it is hoped that a plan can be introduced to ensure inroads can be made into the number of car journeys made.

Meeting for

skateboarders

SKATEBOARDERS and BMX riders are invited to attend a meeting in Liskeard on Monday with a view to starting their own club.

The meeting, to be held in the Cellars youth club behind Liskeard Church opposite Liskeard gym, starting at 6.30pm. The mayor, Tony Powell, will attend.
