Carlton Suite
is up for sale
LISKEARD'S nightclub, The Carlton Suite, has been put up for sale.
The Carlton, based on Liskeard's Parade and owned by the Liskeard-based J P Leisure Group, is being advertised locally and nationally solely through Taylor son and Creber, of Mutley Plain, Plymouth.
The nightclub, with a 20 year lease, which is currently open Fridays and Saturdays, is valued at £235,000. Its turnover is said to be £356,000 with a net profit of £90,000.
The Carlton is advertised as 'a fully licenced nightclub in an unopposed trading location.'
Nick Wheeldon, director of Taylor son and Creber, said some interest has been shown, but as yet there have been no firm offers. However, he hopes a deal will be struck quite early as it is a strong business currently under management.
J P Leisure, whose chairman is Trevor Jones, also run the Inn on the Shore at Downderry, the London Inn at St Neot and Liskeard's Fintan O'Malley's Irish Coffee Bar plus other licenced establishments.
Dawn steps down
from Caradon
LISKEARD district councillor, Dawn Austin, has decided to resign from Caradon council due to personal and family reasons.
Mrs Austin, 47, was recently highly involved in the Action for Market Towns convention, staged at Liskeard, and announced her retirement decision in the successful wake of this event.
A Conservative she represented Liskeard South - and her place will be filled after a by-election later this year. Mrs Austin, of Portwrinkle, became a district councillor following the elections of l999.
Micro-scooters
are stolen
TWO fold-up micro-scooters were stolen from outside the Holland Inn, Hatt last Friday, around 5pm.
Police are now seeking witnesses to the theft, which may be linked to an incident on the same day at Botus Fleming when thieves broke into a house after smashing a window. A block of cheese and a kitchen knife were taken.
Police say they are seeking two youths aged between 14-16 who were wearing blue football shirts. Anyone with information should contact them on 08705 777 444.
End of the line
for Sea Cadet Unit
LISKEARD'S Sea Cadet Unit, Training Ship Caradoc, has finally been broken up, with some Cadets - and Officer in Charge at Liskeard, Roger Beck - transferring to other Units.
The ex chairman of the management committee, Roger Grace, said he would like to thank all who have supported the Unit in the three years it was afloat. He said: 'Whether the help was financial or otherwise we could not have got the Unit up and running without that help, but I am saddened that there was nobody who was willing to make the commitment to help Roger Beck keep it afloat. I am afraid that there are many people who are very quick to criticise the youth of today, but few who are willing to help. I only hope that the other youth organisations in the town are able to survive.'
