Reassurance for HMS Cornwall families
HMS Cornwall, the Devonport based ship adopted by the Cornish Times, is presently in the Mediterranean, and is involved in, as part of Argonaut 2001, the Exercise, Saif Sareea 11, due to begin in October in Oman.
With the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington last week, and the subsequent heightening of tension in the Middle East, families at home may be understandably concerned due to their strategic position.
A spokesperson for the Royal Navy told the Cornish Times yesterday that it wishes to reassure families at home that the position of HMS Cornwall has not changed, and she is still very much committed to the Argonaut 2001 deployment as planned.
'The ship is presently in the Mediterranean and by early October will be joining a combined and joint exercises involving forces of the UK and and the Sultan of Oman' she said.
However, the Royal Navy has stressed it very much understands the reasons for concern in the present climate and hopes relatives will use the special helplines for information at their disposal.
They are: Plymouth Sailors and Families Advice Bureau for Royal Naval families (01752 569696; Royal Marines Welfare (01752 836906); Army (01752 721037).
