careers

evening

SALTASH College is holding a Careers and Information Evening for those interested in courses leading to careers in computing, business and administration.

The evening, on Monday April 2, from 5.30pm-7.30pm, will include information from careers advisors, AYS recruitment and the University of Plymouth. College staff will be on hand to talk about the range of full time and part time courses available in this area. These included NVQs, Modern Apprenticeships, Access to Higher Education courses, new A Levels in Law, Business Studies and Statistics and the new European Computer driving Licence, a computing qualification recognised by companies here and throughout Europe.

Students will also be given information about a new HND course in computing starting in September, subject to validation by the University of Plymouth. The course, reputed to be one most likely to lead to a job, has a strong e-business element, increasingly important to commercial and industrial companies. Students successfully completing the course can join the third year of a BSc in Computing at the University of Plymouth.

Further information about the evening and courses is available on 01752 850200.

Radioactive waste

– your say

THERE is a chance for the public to have their say on the proposed revision of the disposal of radioactive waste by Devonport Royal Dockyard.

A public surgery is being held on Tuesday April 3, at Saltash Guildhall, from 4-8pm, which will allow people to meet Environment Agency inspectors and talk over the changes in more detail.

A timed appointment at this surgery can be booked by calling the Environment Agency on (01392) 444000 and asking for the DML consultation office.

Liskeard show

is cancelled

IT has been confirmed the foot and mouth outbreak has caused the cancellation of the Liskeard Show, due to be held at Merrymeet on July 14.

Show secretary, Alison Melhuish, said council members felt this the responsible thing to do, as it would not be a 'proper agricultural show' without cattle and sheep, and it would have been held on farm land. This is not the first time the event has been abandoned because of foot and mouth, as it was called off in l952 for the same reason.

20mph zones

for town streets

A 20mph zone taking in 33 roads is due to be introduced in Torpoint.

The speed limit would be placed on Goad Avenue and Trevithick Avenue and the residential roads leading off them through a plan being put forward by Cornwall County Council.

Such zones have been introduced in other areas in an attempt to make streets safer for pedestrians.

Maps showing the roads affected in Torpoint can be seen at Caradon District Council's headquarters at Luxstowe House in Liskeard and more information about the scheme can be obtained from the county council on 01872 222000 extension 7320. Objections and other comments should be made to the council before April 12.
