Harry's sight

is restored

AN operation to overcome the cataracts in a woolly monkey's eyes has allowed him to see again.

Harry, the Amazonian woolly monkey from the Monkey Sanctuary near Looe, underwent the operation at the end of July, following an appeal for the £3,000 required for him to be able to regain his sight. The £1,000 operation, which used lasers and was undertaken by Professor Peter Bradford, took place at the Royal Veterinary school in London.

Harry, whose cataracts were a result of his diabetes, is now enjoying aftercare costing £2,000. He is allowed out, following a period in which he had to be kept in a darkened room and looked after 24 hours a day.

Firefighters rescue

animals in danger

TWO young bullocks were saved from certain drowning on Sunday afternoon after they had become firmly stuck in mud on the banks of Looe river, near Terrace Bridge at Sandplace.

Looe fire brigade, assisted by firefighters from Bodmin were called to the scene at 1.20pm and spent two and a half hours digging the cattle out, working against the incoming and fast rising spring tide. Within ten minutes of them being freed the area in which they had been stuck was covered in water. There was a cheer from the driver and passengers on the Looe train which had stopped to watch the rescue operation as it neared its completion. The cattle are owned by Bernard Eastley of Little Larnick Farm.

On Tuesday the Looe brigade were involved in another animal rescue. At 11.00am they successfully managed to release a Jack Russel bitch which had got itself stuck down a rabbit hole in Bridles Lane, Killigarth, Polperro.

Postcards used

in bypass fight

PICTURES of the worst of the traffic jams in Dobwalls are being used by protesters in their battle for a bypass for the village.

The pictures, on specially commissioned postcards, were handed out to motorists by the campaigners at the weekend. Those receiving them were then urged to send them off to the department of transport, environment and the regions.
