Warships involved
in speedboat rescue
TWO battleships, Looe Coastguard, the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and Looe's glass-bottomed boat Aquarius went to the assistance of a speedboat which had capsized offshore from Looe harbour on Wednesday.
Looe Inshore Lifeboat was launched at approximately 5pm in response to a 999 call. HMS Fearless and HMS Illustrious were also on exercise in the area and responded to a general call, HMS Fearless sending its landing craft to assist.
The 12'6 speedboat with 30hp onboard motor had capsized just over quarter of a mile offshore from the harbour. When Looe Inshore Lifeboat arrived on the scene, three young men had been picked up by the glass-bottomed vessel Aquarius. Skipper David Butters recovered the three men, Daniel Gummow, Daniel Margetts and Joe Margetts from the water and towed the speedboat back into Looe harbour.
Councillors night
out at a nightclub
LISKEARD town councillors have accepted an invitation to a night out at the Gossips Club at Carlyon Bay.
The invite came from Jamie Brown, who is behind the new Webb's Hotel venture and who answered councillors' concerns over the proposed night club at Webb's at a presentation at this week's council meeting.
Mr Brown, who owns Gossips, asked members if they would like to join him for a night out and they unanimously agreed.
Councillors also voted unanimously to recommend to Caradon planners that they approve the application, including an entertainments licence until 6am on Fridays and Saturdays.
MP fights against
Tamar bridge tolls
LOCAL MP Colin Breed has tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling for the Tamar Bridge to be exempt from VAT charges.
The Early Day Motion, which calls for Treasury Recognition of the lack of alternative routes between Devon and Cornwall, has already gained the support of other Cornish MPs Paul Tyler, Andrew George and Matthew Taylor.
The motion states that the imposition of VAT on Tamar tolls would have a damaging impact on business in Cornwall, and on individuals, as there is currently no genuine alternative route.
Adding his voice to the growing campaign is Leader of Caradon Council Eric Lewis, who said that the levy of VAT on the Tamar crossing would have a 'harsh impact' on the local community.
Street party
A children's street party, to mark the millennium and the Queen Mother's 100th birthday, is to be held on the Parade, Liskeard on August 6 from 2pm to 5.30pm. It is in support of Clownin' Around, a Christian group which raises funds for children in Mozambique. There will be food and entertainments and tickets are just £1 each on the day or from the town hall.
Pigs to planets
An Upton Cross farmer has turned his attention from pigs to planets, for he has been given outline planning permission from Caradon Council to develop a state of the art observatory.
