Vandal watch

An extra watch is to be kept on South East Cornwall schools during the summer holidays, in a bid to deter vandals.

Hundreds of copies of a leaflet, urging residents to be alert to the threat of vandalism at schools, and to contact the police if any incidents occur, are to be distributed. The leaflets have been produced following an idea by Saltash and Callington police inspector Jon Parlour, and schools liaison officer for East Cornwall, WPc Michelle Turvey. This stemmed from a meeting in Saltash which mentioned increased attacks on schools and libraries, especially in the evenings and during holidays.

WPc Turvey said that unfortunately 'schools are often the targets of crime such as damage, arson and burglary, particularly in the summer holidays.'

Space sessions

Saltash library has organised two Thursday afternoon sessions about space - to co-incide with the eclipse.

About 21 children turned up to the first session last Thursday, when they were shown books on space, and heard stories on the subject.

Festival sabotaged

Organisers if the Moonshadow Festival, to be held during the eclipse at the Crafthole end of Whitsand Bay, fear that vandals who painted 'Cancelled' over posters advertising the event may have caused confusion.

The saboteurs used spray paint to deface two eight by four foot signs erected near Liskeard.

SOS bumblebee

Nature-lovers in Cornwall are being asked to look out for Red clover, a plant needed for the survival of the bumblebee.

Anyone who comes across examples of this plant growing wild are asked to ring Gale's Honey Beeline on 0171 5929491 where the information will be passed to the Bumblebee Working Group.
