It was a bitterly disappointed Blues manager Chris Burchell who trudged off a sodden Lux Park on Saturday knowing that his side had chances to have at least taken fancied Porthleven to a Senior quarter final replay.

"Its the second time this season that they have beaten us by the odd goal when overall there had been nothing between the sides", he said. "On Saturday we were out of sorts in the opening 45 minutes but we pressed them hard in the second and so nearly secured the result."

Porthleven made the best possible start when a blistering drive from Gary Bannister gave them a second minute lead. Porthleven had settled well and a great reflect save from Mark Henwood off Burroughs denied Porth a second.

But 20 minutes into the match and Charlie Legg set up Ian Rowe and he drove past the exposed Henwood from eight yards.

Liskeard pulled one back through Graham Macmillan from a corner only for the visitors to regain their two goal buffer just before half time when Legg converted from a Bannister's centre.

Paul Sowden was particularly solid at the back for Liskeard in a barnstorming second half which saw the Blues fired up and pressing their hosts. The introduction of subs Roger Quaintance and James Gill continued to keep the momentum going despite a breakaway strike from the visitors Justin Harrington.

Almost immediately Argyle YTS prospect Simon Parnell pulled one back and when two minutes later he caught a defender in possession and leathered in Liskeard's third the crowd were buzzing. How important two early misses from Mark Skirton were now proving. With just two minutes left Porthleven shut up shop and kept Liskeard out but it left home supporters thinking about what might have been had the side been given another few minutes to repair earlier damage.
