This was expected to be a David and Goliath affair as Third Division Tideford entertained Premier League side Godolphin. However the game proved to be close than the final 2-0 scoreline suggested.
Polyne Garage sponsored Tideford matched their opponents early on and it was only the class and experience of Robbie Black for Godolphin that seperated the two teams.
It was his distribution that set up the ball for Ben Chapman on the left and his cross completely deceived the Tideford 'keeper and finished up in the back of the net. Godolphin then increased their lead when a long clearance found Chris Wilson who beat the advancing Tideford 'keeper to the ball, rounded him and made it 2-0. Tideford then had to thank Bernie Pearson in goal for an excellent save from close range to prevent the visitors increasing their lead just before half time.
The second half saw Tideford put in that little extra bit of effort, with skipper Mark Bates leading by example with the result that they took the game more to Godolphin. Gary Braid was unlucky when he chipped the visitor's 'keeper when he was off the line, only to see his effort just clear the cross bar.
Andy Parker and Wayne Kirby who had excellent games, caused the visitors endless problems, and with Glen Tookey winning most things in the air, it was unfortunate that Tideford did not have anyone to apply the finishing touched to turn the half chances into goals.
In addition to their skipper Mark Bates, both Mark Bowman and Alisdair Watkins gave little away at the back and the Paul Hetherly was always trying to get the Tideford attack pushing forward.
Substitute Mark Brown gave Tideford an extra option wide on the right hand side, however most of the Tideford attacking came down the middle of the park and as a result they could not get the consolation goal that they probably deserved.
