Two late goals secured victory for Callington at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday but the game should have been over as a contest long before as the Premier League side laid seige to the goal of the Division One visitors.
From the first minutes, Callington were in command with the striking trio of Jason Gregory, Martin Nicholls and Chris Gerry causing all sorts of problems for the Saints. The only surprise when the home side took the lead was that it had taken so long for them to do. When it eventually arrived, on 22 minutes, it was a midfielder who did the damage. The ball ricoched around the St Dennis penalty area before falling to Darren Barford 20 yards out. He launched an up-and-under more akin to the Rugby World Cup but it deceived the defence and 'keeper before finding the back of the net. The home side huffed and puffed but could not break through again and led by 1-0 at the break.
St Dennis came out for the second half like men possessed and forced the Town defence into some desperate defending before equalising on 50 minutes. This did sting the home side out of their slumbers and they began to up the tempo. Martin Nicholls, Jason Gregory and Chris Gerry caused innumeral problems to the Saint's defence up front but the final ball was woefully wide or short while the wingers Barford on the right and Stuart Wakenshaw on the left could not find the telling cross despite creating a lot of room with some swift running. With 90 minutes on the clock and the spectre of extra time looming large, Town launched a raid down the left in the form of Wakenshaw. He beat two defenders before cutting inside, passing another two players and then fired low into the far corner. The relief all around the ground was visible. Then, with four minutes of injury time gone, a cross by Wakenshaw was met six yards out by Gerry who, with his back to goal, flicked the ball over his right shoulder, past a defender and into the net for the match-winning third goal to secure passage for Callington Town into the next round.
