As with the Holsworthy game the match against Truro City in the Cornwall Charity Cup on Wednesday Sept 29 started in atrocious conditions, making it difficult for players, officials and supporters alike.
With play moving from end to end chances were bound to come but Truro were unable to capitalise on four successive corners. Mark Courts, Andy Godfrey, Andy Green and Leigh Underhay all tried to break the deadlock for Saltash but their efforts were blocked or went just wide. Matt Latham's cross from the right was flicked on by Mat Penry for Mike Southgate to fire Ashes into the lead just before halftime.
Unfortunately Saltash started the second half in their dressing room mode and it took Truro less than five minutes to get back on level terms. Matt Moore capitalised on some sloppy defence.
Whether this stung the young guns into action only they will know as within the 15 minutes Ashes scored another three goals. The first came from a poor clearance by the Truro 'keeper leaving Mat Penry the opportunity to fire into an empty net from some forty yards out - a goal that would have held its own in any Premier League game. The pace of Mike Southgate enabled him to score the next two, both with clinical finishes against a somewhat bewildered Truro keeper.
Truro got back into the game in the last quarter of an hour when, with the Ashes appealing for offside, Damien Stevens played the whistle and reduced the arrears. Ten minutes from time Matt Latham opened his account for Saltash with a stunning twenty five yard strike that beat the keeper at his near post. Mike Southgate had the final say, heading home his fourth and Ashes sixth of the evening to send the faithfiil Ashes fans home happy.
