A strong St Blazey side which bore no resemblance to the normal Saturday side found Saltash to be in sparkling form and not an easy side to beat.
Ashes were first to show with Gregg Baldry bringing a fine save out of Avery in the Saints goal. Livewire Darren Butcher then rifled an effort just wide. Butcher made amends for the miss after 35 minutes play, when Lee Grogan put him through to put Ashes in front. Baldry then sliced a shot wide with only Avery to beat.
After the break St Blazey squared matters within five minutes. Nick Isbell made ground down the left and his driven cross into the six yard box wasn't cleared, Gary Dyer was on hand to stab the ball into the net.
Ashes controlled the first period of extra time, driving Saints defenders deep into their own half, and late substitute Mike Southgate beat three defenders on the way to scoring a fine solo goal for Saltash to put them in front. A super Saltash move resulted in Steve Best hitting a scorcher which cannoned off the crossbar.
St Blazey refused to lie down and Gary Dyer again equalised for St Blazey with eight minutes remaining.
The inevitable penalty shoot-out brought high drama to the evening, with Ashes' keeper Chris Stacey bringing off the save to deservedly give Ashes victory, and a place in the semi-finals.
