A TOTAL of £12,500 has been made available in grants to conservation projects in the Callington area. The Sustainable Development Fund, which is accessed through the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team, has awarded these grants to projects that demonstrate sustainable development, that involve and support local communities and those which helped deliver the AONB management plan. Among the projects that received a grant from the fund were the Tamar Valley Teepees, in Luckett near Callington, which received £500 for a compositing toilet, while the Tamar Valley Conservation Volunteers, based in Merryhue near Callington, were awarded £2,000 to go towards the running of the project. Now in its third year, the Tamar Valley AONB had hoped to access £100,000 from Natural England to allocate to different projects but it was reduced due to national reductions. The Sustainable Development fund has awarded grants of £54,000, which is estimated to bring in a total project spend of more than £600,000 into the local community during 2007/08.
