Concerns over one of the most popular Christmas gifts of 2015 – hoverboards – are persisting.
Major retailers are still recalling different makes of the boards and Cornwall’s trading standards department is continuing to investigate their safety.
The authorities in the county have been on alert over hoverboards in recent months.
In November, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire in a child’s bedroom caused by a faulty recharging unit supplied with a hoverboard.
After just an hour on charge, the product caught fire. The batteries overheated to such an extent that they exploded like fireworks around the room.
Among the hoverboards being recalled are: Mitsuta All Smart Gizmos DuoGlyde Self Balancing Drifter/Hoverboard and GT Self-balancing scooter, charger HK-42-2000; John Lewis Selfy Stick Air Runner (white & black) 893 91901 and 893 91902; Menkind and Red5 Flywheels in black, white and red, codes 51974, 51976, 51977 and SmartGlider in ‘cool white’, ‘dazzling red’ and ‘jet black’, codes 51979, 51980, 51978; Argos Nevaboard – catalogue code 455/7669; Tesco iCandy airboard glider – all models; Halfords Air Runner Balance Board, 190375, 192470, 192488; and Swegway ‘double intelligent drift scooter’, a Chinese import from the internet which contains a ‘use’s’ manual with counterfeit CE safety markings and written instructions expressed in very poor English.
A trading standards spokesperson said: ‘If you have purchased any of these and you have concerns about their safety, please stop using them immediately and return them to the retailer.
‘You can normally only make a claim against a seller based in the UK.
‘If the hoverboard was bought after October 1, 2015, then you can get a full refund for up to 30 days after the purchase and if it cannot be repaired or replaced you should get a full refund for up to six months after buying it.
