LISKEARD'S newly-refurbished toilets at Westbourne and Sungirt car parks have been opened to the public and will now be run by Liskeard Town Council.

When Cornwall Council threatened closure of a number of toilet facilities countywide, the town council, responding to concerns from the community, indicated that it wanted to take over the facilities provided they were refurbished, which was agreed.

Mayor Tony Powell said: 'It is now up to our residents to respect the new facilities and to treat them properly.' He has also expressed serious concerns over the level of drugs-related items which were found during the refurbishment of the Sungirt

toilets.

'There were clear indications that drug use was taking place,' he said. 'We are aware there is a serious drug problem in the town and, as a result of these finds, I have spoken to Inspector Tony Joslin and Sergeant Jo Willliams at Liskeard police on the need to monitor such activities in this area. The health of our residents and users is paramount.'
