SINCE the North Cornwall County Under 18 Bowling Competition began in 2000, Torpoint Bowling Club have hosted the event, and always produced the winner. The competition which was held on Sunday, August 29, was aimed at encouraging younger people to take part in what could be seen as a sport for older people. It has been particularly successful in Torpoint, due to a liason between Torpoint School and the club. Chris Goodman, a PE teacher at Torpoint School, goes along to the coaching sessions held after school on a Monday during the summer, and this is the first year that Torpoint has narrowly missed out on winning the competition. Luke Wright from Lostwithiel fought tough competition to become this year's champion, winning 21 shots to 12, in a close match against Chris Symons from Torpoint. Other competitors were Neville Kershaw, Grant Pomeroy, Patrick Goodman, all from Torpoint, and Matthew Moore from Stratton. Anyone interested in taking up bowls should contact the Secretary Len Hawke on 01752 814658.
