Two local people have been enjoying the cold weather a lot more than the rest of us - competing in skiing contests.

Rachel Morgan of Saltash, pictured right, helped the women's team take second place in the British Services International alpine ski championships in St Moritz, Switzerland.

Rachel, a midwife in the Queen Alexandra's Royal Navy Nursing Service, became a ski instructor just six weeks after taking up the sport, because it came so naturally to her. She said she used to be a mountaineer and thinks that helped.

Rachel joined the Royal Navy six years ago and is based at the Royal Navy hospital in Gibraltar.

Private Shane Jones, whose parents live in Liskeard has just taken part in the Infantry biathlon competition at Lillehammer, Norway. He is currently serving as a combat infantryman in a rifle platoon in the lst Battalion, the Devonshire and Dorset regiment, and is a member of the Combined Arms Training Battle-group based in Warminster.
