A NEW ’Community Cupboard’ initiative has been launched in a town to help people get through the lockdown.
In Looe, the Town Council has placed a box in the Millpool with labelled plastic boxes for different sorts of items – essentials, as well as things to help pass the time while staying at home.
Now it would like residents to pass by on their daily walk and help stock the community cupboard with items such as toys and board games, baby and personal hygiene items, arts and crafts or items for gardening.
Councillor Edwina Hannaford said: ’We are asking local people to share with other residents on a ‘give and take’ basis any non-perishable, non-food items. Some are essential for living and some items just help to make life a little more bearable; life’s little luxuries!’
All items should be new and unwrapped and among the suggestions on the list are gloves, toilet rolls, sanitary items and nappies, magazines, colouring books, paints and brushes, knitting needles and wool, seeds and compost, toys and baby clothes.
’Have a look in your cupboards, under the stairs, in the far recesses of your bathroom or shed for things you no longer need, that others might be able to make good use of,’ said the Council.
’We don’t expect you to make a special visit, just drop things off on your daily exercise route or let the Looe Town Council volunteers know you have items that you no longer need that need collecting by emailing [email protected].’
Gloves and hand sanitiser are provided at the cupboard so that people can stay safe when dropping or collecting items.
’If you have spare non-perishable food items please leave them at the Foodbank collection point at East Looe Co-op,’ Cllr Hannaford continued.
’We are planning further initiatives in the future like sharing surplus produce and a lucky dip!’
