Looe's chief coastguard Paul Pengelly, stepped into the breach at the February meeting of the Old Cornwall Society when the advertised speaker was unable to attend, and captivated his audience with a lively, informative and much appreciated account of the work of the coastguards.
Originally part of the Royal Navy they are now an agency of the Transport Department. Looe with its 11 strong team is part of a sector covering from Brixham to the Dodman and is responsible for beaches, foreshore, estuaries and cliff paths.
A lively discussion followed, closed only by the serving of refreshments by the Shearmans and Steedens. Doris Enever conducted the draw. The Society's next meeting is at 2.30pm on Saturday, March 11 in the Buffaloes' Hall in the Millpool. The AGM will be followed by a talk by Mr Roy Perriment.
