Saltash Blind and Partially sighted club (BAPS) held its first concert on Saturday evening at Saltash Wesley Church. Sue Hooper was the compere and she welcomed the mayor and mayoress, Bob and Jackie Austin. The programme opened with Western Approach barbershop group, led by Dick Knight, singing a selection including In My Room, Let There Be Peace On Earth and Do You Hear The People Sing. Seventeen-year-old Sophie King, soprano, sang On My Own and several other songs. She also recited a poem. Eight-year-old Rose Bonner then delighted the audience with her piano playing. Callington Town Band, under the musical direction of Paul Boase, ended the concert singing carols, and were joined by the audience. Shirley Evans, chairman of Saltash BAPS, organised the event, and even appeared in a Santa Claus costume to present bouquets to Sue Hooper and Sophie and a gift for Rose. The club started in 1991 and has since risen from 14 members to 40. They meet each week at the SHADO centre on Tuesday afternoons. Anyone wishing to join contact Shirley on 01752 846166.
