ONE of the top awards for football in the community has gone to Torpoint Athletic Football Club and Torpoint Youth. They have been awarded the coveted South West Region FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year Award 2004. The presentation took place at the Club's home, The Mill in Torpoint. Cornwall County FA President, Brian Conyon presented the prestigious Award to delighted Torpoint officials. Cornwall FA Secretary Barry Cudmore, said: 'It's a great example of football at the heart of the community. Torpoint provide coaching and playing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, and they do this to a nationally recognised FA standard. This is why they have won the South West Award, they are a club that encourage football development, involving the whole community.' The standards have been set by the FA Charter standards scheme, include offering a variety of opportunities for volunteers, providing a safe environment for participating in the game as well as ensuring players, spectators and the club officials are governed by a code of conduct. Torpoint have all this and more, they have embarked on a programme of healthy eating options for their players. The Harbour Lights and Wheelers of Torpoint have been key partners in helping the club to gain this award, offering the team sponsorship. The FA Charter Standard scheme also covers schools, where children are encouraged to attend weekly coaching sessions to foster a lifelong involvement in the national game.
