STRONG criticism that the town centre of Saltash is in need of a good clean up and that the industrial estate is a slum, has spurred town councillors into action. At their Industry, Commerce and Transportation Committee which met on Wednesday night, the mayor, Sue Hooper, brought back these comments from the Saltash Chamber of Commerce which she had attended. Such was their concern, and in many cases agreement, with the views expressed by the Chamber of Commerce, that councillors are now hoping to form an action plan at a meeting to be held early in the new year. They will be inviting representatives from Caradon, the Chamber of Commerce, county council and land and industrial unit owners to try and work out what can be done. Cllr Hooper expressed her concern that although it is not always the town council which is responsible for these types of problems, they usually got the blame. Cllr Bruce Reid, chairman of the ICT committee, agreed with the Chamber's complaints and said the industrial estate at Carkeel was a shambles. 'I would like to see it tidied up and made consumer friendly,' he said. Commenting about Fore Street and empty premises left in a bad condition, Cllr Baz Gregory described them as 'an embarrassment to the council.' He said there should be a name and shame policy and offered to personally visit the offending premises and post the names of the landlords on the windows. Mr Bill Cotton, chairman of the Saltash Chamber of Commerce, attended the council's meeting and confirmed the mayor had correctly informed councillors of his organisation's views. 'Everyone should get together and help solve this situation,' he said.
