THE Rame Peninsula Beach Care group is urgently appealing for volunteers to beat the tide and collect as much rubbish as they can from the beaches in Whitsand Bay, before it all gets washed back out to sea.

Spokesperson Claire Wallerstein said: 'There's still a mind-boggling amount of post-storm rubbish at Whitsand, especially on Main Beach (Tregantle). On Sunday I picked up an entire bin bag of bottle tops alone.

'I am appealing to any individuals to lend a hand before it all gets washed back into the sea on the next spring tide. I am unable to organise another big community clean-up until early February, and am doing what I can with a few friends.'

Claire says if people go down to the beach for a walk but take a sack and a protective pair of gloves with them they could make a big difference. Also if people speak to Jim at the cafe he will haul sacks up the cliffside in the cage which is used, as long as they are not overloaded and are properly tied.

Anyone helping out is asked not to try to walk back up the paths with more than one sack; to take care on rocks; not to pick up anything sharp or too heavy; and to keep away from unstable cliffs. Sacks of rubbish must not to be left on the beach.

The group would also be grateful if people who have collected rubbish could let them know via their Facebook page if possible, especially if anything interesting is found.
