The Clean Air Strategy for Cornwall has been given the go-ahead by Cornwall Council’s Cabinet.

Geoff Brown, portfolio holder for communities, said: ’The Clean Air Strategy for Cornwall provides a firm basis for Cornwall Council to improve air quality and a clear policy for future planning and local air quality management.

’It’s an important step forward in improving air quality in our seven Air Quality Management Areas for residents and visitors alike.’

The strategy focuses on reducing the amount of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates caused by vehicle emissions in Cornwall.

It includes updated individual Air Quality Action Plans to improve the air quality within six of Cornwall’s Air Quality Management Areas in Bodmin, Camborne-Pool-Redruth, Gunnislake, St Austell, Tideford and Truro.

The seventh Air Quality Management Area in Camelford was declared in January 2017.

The strategy also includes specific projects to help tackle air quality issues, such as:

Encourage uptake of alternative fuels and low emission transport.

Provision of 37 new buses, representing an 84% reduction in emissions for the buses replaced.

Improvements to the walking and cycling environment.

The Council reviewing its own policies for selecting pool and fleet vehicles and travel planning.

A publicity campaign to increase awareness of air quality problems and to reduce vehicle engine idling.

A developers’ contribution strategy to ensure developers contribute to measures to improve air quality.
