Transplant athlete Terry Wright has been elected Looe's new Citizen of the Year, town councillors describing him as a most fitting heir to the title, to follow on from marathon and soon to be Olympic runner, Marian Sutton.
Forty four year old Terry suffered complete kidney failure and was on dialysis for two years, but in 1992 a donor was found and a year later he was able to return to work in Devonport Dockyard, where he is a manager.
Since his own experience he has been involved in fundraising for the Kidney Association and the promotion of the importance of carrying Donor Cards. But it is his outstanding achievements in the world of athletics which have put him and Looe into the spotlight.
He first began competing at the Transplant Games in 1993.
Mayor David Bryan, said some very worthy people had been nominated for the Citizen of the Year honour, but it was felt that Terry's outstanding achievements in sport against all the odds must be formally recognised by the town in which he lives and which is so proud of him.
Terry will receive the Adamson Shield at Looe Town Council on Monday, April 17, at 6.30pm. The shield was presented to the town last year by the Mayor and Mayoress (Annette Bryan), in memory of Dave's first and late wife, Janet Bryan, and her mother, the late Mrs Buffy Adamson.
