A community cinema which has been going strong for a decade will celebrate with a special anniversary screening.

When Looe’s commercial cinema closed its doors in 1999, many in the town thought it spelled the end of film shows locally.

But in 2006 a group of enthusiasts formed the Looe Film Society, and their first show at Looe Primary School was The Constant Gardener.

In 2009, the Looe Community Cinema – the Cinema by the Sea as it is known – moved to its current home in the Looe Children’s Centre on the Barbican.

With the help of awards from The National Lottery and Cornwall Community Foundation, new sound and projection equipment was installed. Audiences can now experience full surround sound and see films projected in High Definition, said chairman Dr Derek Spooner. It now provides 20 shows a year, including screenings of full-length theatrical performances.

A celebration evening will be held at the Cinema by the Sea on Wednesday, November 16. The event will begin at 7pm, with the film Love and Friendship beginning at 8pm.
