A repair project at St Hugh’s Church in Quethiock has finally been completed.

Repairs to the roof of the ancient church have been carried out and lighting has been replaced.

Richard Winstone, speaking on behalf of the parochial church council, said the main works were finished in June 2016 ‘but shortly afterwards the ceiling slats started falling out and the church had to be shut for safety reasons.

‘Contractors Ryearch came to the rescue and have re-screwed each of the slats in the south aisle and chapel using 4,700 brass screws.

Unfortunately, we had to use money that we had raised for the amplification system that we wanted to install, so fund-raising will still continue.

’However, an unexpected benefit was that while the nave was scaffolded, we were able to closely inspect the magnificent Green Men bosses on the ceiling of which the church has an unusual six.’ The works were completed with grant support from Viridor Credits, the SITA Cornwall Trust, the National Churches Trust, the Cornwall Historic Churches Trust, Quethiock Parish Council and fund-raising efforts by the congregation and people of the parish.

After a break from building works, a project will start in a few months to repair the church’s north wall.
