Celebrating Saltash is the title of a festival to be held in SS. Nicholas & Faith parish church, in conjunction with the May Fair, in 2005. Businesses , schools and organisations from all over the town have been invited to take part. The oldest parts of the medieval church were built more than eight-hundred years ago. The building, which has served the community for centuries, is a significant part of the town's heritage and it is in constant need of repair and restoration. The parochial church council (PCC) always have a programme of work in progress to maintain and preserve the building. Part of their task is to keep it available for Sunday worship, civic occasions and important family events. This cannot be achieved without the help of the whole community. Major restoration work has already been carried out on the tower. This has enabled the bells, which were silent for many years, to ring out on Sundays, and for important occasions in the life of the town and nation. The PCC have already raised sufficient funds to carry out the next phase of the programme. This will involve improving access from the street, renewing of the entrance paths and the installing of a sound system in the church building. Further work is planned. The church building needs rewiring and an improved lighting system. The Victorian heating system is coming to the end of its life and needs replacing. Work began on the floor many years ago and this now needs bringfing to completion. The stonework of the great 15th centry east window is in need of major repair. Significant work is also needed on one of the other windows, the lead valleys, the rainwater goods and the roof. Together these works will cost about £400,000. Requests for help with the 'Celebrating Saltash', which is designed to kick start the appeal have already met with a very positiive response and more offers of help are still coming in. Any business or indidvidual who would like to be involved should get in touch with the rector.
